President’s Message

2001 activities are being planned with emphasis on lessons learned during 2000. The feedback received from members is a major factor in our planning for 2001. The frustrations expressed by some over tasked volunteers are also a factor. While the details need to be finalized, the present direction is:
* No change in dues, species of the month, meeting location or newsletter.
* At least 6 Monthly Membership Meetings will be held at 7:30 PM on the 2nd Friday in April through September (and possibly October).
* At least 3 hands-on Membership Meetings, where the members get to make rigs or work on their fishing gear, skills or both.
* At least 3 guest speakers at Membership Meetings (less than in 2000; freeing up our meeting time to get more hands-on time).
* Tournaments and club fishing events will closely resemble those we had in 2000.
* The VHFC library will get started.

Fishing Tips and Fishing Reports on our club's web site (by Dave Sikorski)

The VHFC Website has been updated in nearly all areas. We made a lot of progress this year.
The Fishing Tips area is the portion of the site that still needs the most work.  You all have your favorite techniques for out-smarting your favorite fish.  We need your inputs to share on the web with other members. Please take the time and send one or two tips to : VHFCInfo@aol.com.
I would also like to add fishing reports to this area, but the reports would have to come from the club members as well.
We could share a wealth of knowledge on the Website.  Give the web site a chance, check it out, and send us your inputs and suggestions and ideas.

Surf Fishing Tournament (by Steve Cook)

October 14th, the day for the Village Harbour Surf Tournament, is rapidly approaching. There is still plenty of space left on the beach and in the restaurant for any member that would like to register and participate.
It promises to be a fun-filled and educational day. For those who never really got into surf fishing and always wanted to try it, this would be a great time to see what it's all about. Some of the saltier surf fishing members will help the novices.
Some may use plugging rods, some may use surf rods to heave live bait and sinkers and some may use both.
If any member has already registered and now cannot make it, please let a committee member know as we have to let the Gateway Restaurant know how many members will be attending the group luncheon following the tournament.
If any member has any questions or needs further information about this event, please feel free to call the chairman or any committee member.

Artificial Reef Day (by Dave Sikorski)

VHFC is planning another fleet fishing day for members. On Saturday, October 28 we will take the fleet to one of the artificial reefs located within close proximity of Long Beach Island. The current plan is to fish the Barnegat Light reef, which is very close to the Barnegat Inlet.
If there is a reef that most everyone would rather fish, we could change our destination. As with our previous fleet trips and our Surf Tournament, the intent of reef day is to get the group together and get to know each other and to share fishing knowledge in a setting that may be new to many of our members.
There are no prizes or luncheons planned for this event. We are just going fishing together and having a good time.
Hopefully there will be plenty of Sea Bass and Blackfish (AKA: Tautog) on the reef.
To sign up, please e-mail your name, boat name, phone number and e-mail address to Dave Sikorski at: SkiFront4@aol.com.
or call Dick Vesper at 608-494-0263.
Please indicate if you need a ride or if you can take other anglers. Also, let us know how many people you plan to bring on your boat. You can also sign up for this event at the October 13 club meeting.

WARNINGS FROM THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY (by Dick Vesper)

The fish and wildlife people have published advice to the general population which I have interpreted for our local waters as best as I could. What it tells me is "do not eat (locally caught stripers, American eels and bluefish over 6 pounds) more than once a week."
High risk individuals such as children under 15, pregnant women, nursing mothers and women of child bearing age are advised: "do not eat." I double-checked with JCAA's Tom Fote and he advised us to follow the guidelines. The State's basis for concern is justified.
I saw no warnings for eating fluke, winter flounder, sea bass, blackfish or weakfish.
